The West Coast

Western Sicily was settled by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and the great European powers of the Middle Ages, and their presence is still much in evidence.

Mazara del Vallo

Mazara del Vallo · [map] may be of Phoenician origin but Arab influences predominate, from the Tunisian trawlermen to the Arab music and shisha hubble-bubble pipes. However the Kasbah with its maze of backstreets has been newly gentrified with freshly painted houses and ceramic plaques and murals. The town has a long and pleasant tree-shaded seafront, with marina and beach, and a centre of fine churches. Within a deconsecrated church the Museo del Satiro (Satyr Museum, Tue 9am–1.30pm, Wed–Sat 9am–5.30pm, Sun 9am–12.30pm) houses the 4th century BC bronze satyr, known as the Dancing Satyr. This was hauled up from the seabed by local fishermen and underwent a restoration in Rome. The statue is 2 metres (6.5ft) high and although both arms and a leg are missing you can see that the satyr is performing a wild ecstatic dance, his head thrown back and his hair flowing.
